Ants

Home > Insects > Hymenoptera > Ants

Kingdom: Animalia
Class: Insecta
Order: Hymenoptera

Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen predatory individuals living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies that may occupy large territories and consist of millions of individuals. Larger colonies consist mostly of sterile wingless females forming castes of "workers", "soldiers", or other specialised groups. Nearly all ant colonies also have some fertile males called "drones" and one or more fertile females called "queens". The colonies sometimes are described as superorganisms because the ants appear to operate as a unified entity, collectively working together to support the colony

According to the Thailand Natural History Museum there is an estimated 800 - 1,000 species of ant in Thailand, with only 247 of these being recorded.
Many thanks to Benoit Guénard (Assistant Professor, School of Biological Sciences, University of Hong Kong) for his help identifying the ants on this page.

Black Ants about 2 mm long, the first picture shows the Ant's size next to a one baht coin. These ant's were moving very quickly and were constantly bringing insect prey to their underground nest, including centipedes, spiders and flies.
According to Benoit Guénard these ants are probably Paratrechina longicornis, an invasive species, but he has doubt with Iridomyrmex anceps. This highlights the difficulty of Identifying ants from pictures, especially at the species level.
